Can you use the camera you already own for livestreaming?

Here’s something you might’ve been wondering after watching the last two livestreaming episodes: wait, I already have a camera! And it looks WAY better than that webcam! Why can’t I just use that for livestreaming?

Welp, you just might be able to do that – but it depends on three things.

  1. Does your camera output a clean, high-resolution HDMI image? (Many cameras – especially DSLRs! – cannot.)
  2. Is now a good time to drop $180 on a capture device?
  3. What kind of camera do you have? Is it a video camera, as opposed to a photo camera that also records video (like a DSLR)? If not, you might have a hard time.

By the end of this video – and after you plug your camera into a TV to see what kind of HDMI output it gives you – you’ll know if you should buy a capture device to use your existing camera, or if a webcam would be a smarter option.
